    Thoughts are automatic. Sometimes, when you are idle, you get thoughts. Then, you realise why and how you got those thoughts. Thoughts are random unless you consciously think. Thinking is a manual process. Like, when I’m writing this answer, I am.   The word thought refers to a single thought and in this way it's similar to the noun idea. Thinking refers to the process of thinking. You can think of thoughts as products of thinking. BTW, thinking is not always a noun.
